18-35 year old tours 3 Day Liveaboard Dive TripQueensland's World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef is an underwater paradise and a living work-in-progress believed to be over 10,000 years old and over 500 meters thick in some places. It reaches north from just off Bundaberg in central Queensland to the very tip of Australia, the Cape York Peninsula. The Great Barrier Reef is based on the outer margin of Australia's continental shelf - once a part of the Queensland coast. The Reef is closer to the coast in northern Queensland - as near as nine miles from Port Douglas and Cairns - while at its southern end it is nearly 100 miles away. Like underwater jungles, coral reefs flourish in warm tropical seas and support an incredibly diverse and dense ecosystem including sponges, coral, shellfish, marine mammals and fish - more than 1,500 varieties of fish, in fact. The inner reef has a maximum depth of 130 feet, with the coral walls of the outer reef plunging to depths of as much as 24,000 feet. Reef diving is world-class year round, with the most consistently good weather and best underwater visibility from August to January. Generally, diving on the Reef is quite easy and safe because of the conservative depths, warm water and excellent visibility. Average ocean temperature off Cairns ranges from the mid-70s to mid-80s; water off the coast of Brisbane ranges from 70 to 80 degrees. Most of the best diving is within 60 feet of the surface. Newly-certified divers should have no problems diving at most sites. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority manages and protects an area of 215,000 square miles of waters around the Reef. Its the largest marine park in the world, and a dive destination of international renown.
